Fifteen years in financial services, eight in consulting, and most recently using data and technology in litigation and crisis response: the programmes that run after a reported figure has gone wrong. Much of that work ended at the same place, in transformation logic written over years, spread across systems and read in full by nobody. Answering for a number meant reading that code by hand. Cosmogenesis is the engine Sam built so the reading could be done from source, graded by what it can evidence, and refused where it cannot. He runs it today in a paid proof of value with an Australian bank.
The philosophical idea behind Cosmogenesis.
Cosmogenesis is the formation of a universe, structure emerging from apparent chaos.
A large organisation's systems look much the same, with years of code and an order between them nobody has read in full.
Cosmogenesis reads supplied executable source and resolves the relationships it can establish into a source-linked graph.
That order is discovered and not invented, then resolved and made inspectable.
The idea behind Cosmogenesis is that complexity becomes intelligible once its relationships can be seen.
How the work is done
Compiled from source, in the deployment you run.
- The reading
- The reading is compiled from the source you supply, and no model is involved, so the same source, read under the same conditions, gives the same record, byte for byte.
- Where it runs
- Cosmogenesis is available as a containerised application. A SaaS service is in beta. In the deployment you run, the reading runs on infrastructure you control and the record stays there.
- A first reading
- A first reading is of one system, under access you grant and revoke, with an end date written before it starts. One page comes back naming what it reads, the access, the end and the decision, and three documents follow, the lineage sheet, the report and the signed document.
- Who checks
- Specialists check the answers the reading produced.
What has been read
Two synthetic specimens and one census.
Both specimens stand open on the Evidence page and are named there as synthetic. The first is four short files, and the second holds four artefacts of the kind a working system carries, an ETL package, a stored procedure, a view and a scheduled job.
One third party's application codebase has been read as a test corpus of 698 stages across 4 languages (web pages 419, application code 186, database procedures 49, browser scripts 44), and it is a census of what was read and resolved. The corpus is not named, the record is served with every name replaced by a placeholder, and the full record is withheld.
Cosmogenesis was built in Sydney by a small team, and it is in a paid proof of value with an Australian bank today.
